Dr. Ali Mohammad M. Qadi
Resident, Joint Program of Family & Community Medicine, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Summary
Worldwide concern about school health programs started in the nineteenth century.  School health service is an important aspect of health sector since it serves an important sector of any population, namely children and youth.
In Jeddah, there are around 520 school served by four school health dispensaries (SHD) distributed in four different areas in Jeddah, center (main), north (alsafa), south (almahger) and east (aljamah).
The aim of the study is to determine the disease pattern in these SHD and to explore any demographic factors affecting the disease pattern.
The study was prospective cross-sectional type, 600 patients was the sample size.
The results showed the high prevalence of the following diseases: acute nasopharengitis, acute tonsilitits, acute bronchitis, chicken pox and acute gastroenteritis.  We found statistically significant difference in the prevalence of skin and eye disease in the different SHD.  Other diseases were found to have no significant statistical relation to the attributes determined in the checklist.
We recommend in this study to upgrade the knowledge of the doctors working in the SHD about the common presentations like respiratory tract diseases, to encourage doctors to maintain continuous medical education by allowing them to attend scientific meeting and seminars and to establish a protocol for common diseases seen in the SHD.  Also it is recommended to improve and activate health education programs in different school levels, and to perform a bigger research to define more precisely the pattern of disease in school and factors related to it.
